Coyote Hunt

The winter coyote hunts are coming soon. Here is the link to last year’s discussion.

The 2006 Hunt, the 15th Annual Yote Hunt, is slated for February 17-19, 2006. You can download an application here.

The statewide event is the largest of its type:

Three sportsmen’s clubs — Mosquito Creek Sportsmen’s Association in Clearfield County, Sigel Sportsmen’s Club in Jefferson County and St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club in Elk County — are holding coyote hunts concurrently Feb. 17-19. Hunters who shoot a coyote can enter it into all three contests and triple their chances of winning some money.

To sign up for all three:

To register for the Sigel hunt by mail, send $10 plus a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Sigel Sportsmen Club, PO Box 155, Sigel, PA 15860. You can also register on-line at www.sigelsportsmenclub.com. Registrations will also be taken from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at the club, located one mile north of the Route 36 blinker light in Sigel.

To register for the St. Marys hunt, visit www.stmaryssportsmen.org for an application or stop by Elk County Arms and Ammo or Smith’s Sports Store in St. Marys. Cost to register is $5, though hunters must also become a member of the club.

To register for the Mosquito Creek hunt, visit www.mosquitocreeksportsmen.com or call 814-263-4510 for a list of times and places where you can register in person.

The federal government just held a special different kind of of coyote hunt in Arizona.

Federal authorities have killed 200 coyotes in southeast Arizona in the past three weeks after ranchers complained that they were eating calves.

The hunt, which ended Friday, was conducted from aircraft as part of a program run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The shootings took place on private and public land used by 10 to 15 ranchers, the Arizona Daily Star reported Sunday.

You can’t hunt a ‘yote by airplane in Pennsylvania, but this statewide hunt it huge. Besides, when was the last time you could actually make money by being a successful hunter.
