The Deer Debate Continues

This probably will never end…

Check out the latest story about the deer management in Pennsylvania.

According to Pennsylvania Game Commission figures, hunters last season bagged an estimated 361,560 deer, which was up two percent from the decade-low 354,390 they took the year before.

Hunters took 135,290 antlered deer in the 2006-07 seasons, compared to the previous year’s harvest of 120,500.

Last season’s total deer kill was up two percent from the year before, but it was still the second-lowest of the past decade.

The article goes through the numbers and the Game Commission’s response (“If you take deer out of the picture we [the Game Commission] are doing pretty good”), and then concludes with this antidote:

[A recent] writer said it feels like the country is teetering on the edge of success and failure and the upcoming election will tip the scales one way or the other.

In my opinion, hunting in Pennsylvania stands on an equally precarious precipice.

It just seems like something is about to happen that will either pull hunting back to a safe place or push it off the cliff.

I don’t know what that “something” is, but I feel pretty confident it will involve deer management.
